Whether you are on campus or online, showing up and participating makes a big difference. If you need to miss class, communicate early and stay on track.

In Class (On Campus or Online)

• Be present, prepared and on time.
• Put distractions (like your phone) away.
• Listen and participate in discussions.
• Ask questions and connect with your classmates and instructor.
• Use class time for learning 鈥� not catching up on homework.
• Check announcements and discussion boards regularly.

If You Need to Miss Class

• Read your syllabus to understand attendance and late work policies.
• Email your instructor before class. Include your name, course and date(s) you will miss.
• Submit work early when possible.
• Don鈥檛 ask, 鈥淒id I miss anything?鈥� Ask a classmate for notes.
• If you will miss multiple days, contact your Advisor for support.

Stay ahead with smart planning.

• Use a calendar to organize due dates, weekly tasks and long-term deadlines.
• Break big projects into smaller steps.
• Follow the 2:1 rule. Plan for two hours of out-of-class work for every one hour in class.
• Read the syllabus carefully. Know expectations, due dates and late policies.
• Start and submit early to avoid last-minute issues or technology problems.
• Communicate early if something affects your ability to submit work.
• Attend student success workshops to strengthen time management skills.

Know how you learn best. Speak up when you need support.

• Study where you focus best (library, student lounge, kitchen table, etc.).
• Study when you are most alert 鈥� day or night.
• Prefer to learn with others? Start or join a study group.
• What worked in high school may not work in college. Adjust as needed.
• Ask questions during or after class.
• Visit your instructor during office hours or schedule a Zoom meeting.
• Read instructor feedback to improve future work.
• Attend a student success workshop to build better habits.

• Get plenty of sleep and fresh air
• Stay hydrated
• Be sure to eat to fuel your body
• Stay connected with friends, family or pets
• Visit the Wellness Center for a workout
• Use Mental Health Services:
  • Read the Mental Health monthly newsletter for tips

  • Reach out to your advisor to learn about in-person counseling

College success is about community 鈥� make connections beyond the classroom.

• Join clubs, athletics or campus events to connect with others.
• Create or join a study group. Consider inviting your instructor.
• Meet up with classmates to review or study together.
• In online classes, connect through discussion boards and group projects.
